Size AI supports 90+ garment types including shirts, pants, dresses, and jackets

A typical thrift run produces a wave of t-shirts, jeans, and hoodies. The same fifteen garment types fill most resellers' inventory week after week. The remainder is the long tail: a vintage flannel, a wrap dress, a shacket, a pair of corduroy pants from a brand that stopped making them in 2014. Reseller margins live in that long tail. The 90th-percentile garment usually pays better than the 50th.

Size AI's measurement engine covers 92 garment types across 9 categories. What follows is the full list, plus what we don't measure and why. We add new garment types every quarter or so, based on what resellers ask for.

What Size AI measures

The 92 types cover most of what comes through a reseller's basement: shirts, sweaters, jackets, vests, pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, and underwear. Coverage is weighted toward apparel that moves on resale marketplaces, with extra depth in the categories where fit and sizing matter most (tailored shirting, denim, dresses, and outerwear).

The capture flow is the same for every category. Lay the garment flat, get the contrast right, fire the shutter from 90 degrees. The on-device model recognizes the category from the silhouette and adjusts the measurement points to match. A tank top gets fewer points on screen. A tailored blazer gets the full set: chest, waist, length, sleeve, shoulder, plus a handful of category-specific points.

What Size AI doesn't measure (and why)

The LiDAR plus edge-detection pipeline is built for flat-lay garment cloth. Non-cloth shapes don't yield useful keypoints because the depth map and edge model both rely on fabric drape and seam geometry. Rigid surfaces, like leather shoes, hard plastic accessories, and metal jewelry, break those assumptions. The team has explored separate capture modalities for footwear, but the iOS app today doesn't include them.

Categories that are out of scope:

  • Shoes and footwear. Different geometry, different measurement conventions (length, width, instep), different value drivers. A separate measurement system would be needed.
  • Bags and accessories. Hard structure, internal compartments, hardware. The flat-lay model doesn't produce useful output here.
  • Jewelry and watches. Outside the cloth-and-seam domain entirely.
  • Hats and headwear. Some types might capture (knit beanies), but circumference measurement on a hat doesn't match what marketplace buyers actually need.
  • Belts and scarves. Long, narrow, and either rigid (leather belts) or non-rectangular when laid flat (scarves). Out of scope today.

We add new garment types every quarter or so, based on user requests. If you want a type added, flag it through the app's feedback channel.

Common questions

What about vintage band tees and graphic-print shirts?

Yes, Graphic Tees are among the 13 shirt types covered. The chest print does not influence measurements, as the depth map disregards surface texture and focuses on the silhouette. TrueShape output preserves color and graphic detail for listing photos.

What about lingerie and swimwear?

Coverage varies. Bike Shorts, Compression Shorts, and Athletic Tanks cover most performance and base-layer garments. Swim Trunks are categorized under shorts. Bras, bralettes, and traditional lingerie are not currently supported.

What about activewear and athleisure?

Performance Shirts, Athletic Shorts, Athletic Tanks, Joggers, Track Pants, Track Jackets, Compression Shorts, and Bike Shorts cover most activewear, including yoga, running, and gym-related items.

What about one-of-a-kind or custom pieces?

The garment classifier identifies the closest match within its 92-type catalog and selects appropriate measurement points. Custom items with unique silhouettes may require manual category overrides in the Garment Detail screen.

When will [garment X] be added?

New garment types are added quarterly based on user request volume. Requests can be submitted through the app's feedback feature for consideration.
