What’s the RN number on a clothing tag?
An RN, or Registered Number, is an identifier assigned by the US Federal Trade Commission to companies involved in making, importing, or selling garments within the United States. It appears on the clothing tag as “RN” followed by five or six digits, typically located near the line detailing fiber content.
The RN is particularly valuable as it remains intact even when the brand tag does not. While a faded or removed brand label offers no information, the RN still reveals the company responsible for the garment. Resellers rely on it to verify a brand prior to listing, and vintage collectors use RN ranges to date items, since lower numbers were issued earlier. The FTC’s public database allows anyone to look up an RN.
Size AI captures the RN automatically along with all other details on the tag, so each processed item keeps a verifiable record of its origin.
